Found your Roadrunner photos in a search for inspiration for sketching. Really like all the images-around San Diego, etc..

Great photos and text! Pretty impressive. The river trail you are talking about is part of a larger plan to have a trail and park system along the entire river. The San Diego River Park Foundation is working to make the trail extend from OB all the way to the local mountains. Nearly 52 miles in all. Had you gone east from near Old Town off of Pacific Hwy
rather than west you would have passed through the Mission Valley Preserve which is a 51 acre open space preserve home to many rare and endangered plants and birds (like the Gnat Catcher and least Bell's Vireo) The trail ends at present at Hotel Circle North.

At the west side right before getting to the end of the trail at the beach you pass by the coastal dune, intertidal and wetland area. Over 95% of these habitat types have disappeared due to development. The Friends of the San Diego River Mouth, a volunteer group supported by the San Diego River Park Foundation works to preserve and restore the site on the 4th Saturday of odd numbered months from 9am-Noon. The river channel you traveled on from Pac. Hwy is the Southern Wildlife preserve, an important stopover for birds on the Pacific Flyway. A great place for bird watching. We are so lucky in San Diego for having such great opportunities for outdoor recreation and wildlife viewing.
